Here, right now, at this very moment, the moment your reading this. You are going to learn how to set up your chicks first temporary home! You are also going to see pictures of when my chickens where little chicks!
I have listed most of the things you will need for a brooder box in other recent posts. If you haven’t read those posts, you should!
So, first off, what is a brooder box? A brooder usually refers to some type of heated enclosure for raising baby poultry.

There you have it! So, now, finally, let’s get started. First gather supplies.
Some supplies:
- Heat lamp, red bulb
- Animal/pet safe cleaner or disinfectant. A blend that will work, if you don’t want to buy a cleaner is… approximately 10% bleach, 90% water.
- Absorbent wood shavings, not cedar.
- Chick starter feeder
- Chick feeder & waterer
- And the box (that will serve as the brooder) itself
Since I have obviously done this many times before, here are some tips I can give you!
- Pick the right sized box, for your brooder. You don’t want anything too small. Whatever container you decide to use, it should be 4ft x 3ft. And that will suit up too, 20 chicks.
- Have everything set up before going to buy the chicks. This will be super handy. I have heard many stories of people who don’t want chickens again. Because of their one experience where they didn’t have the brooder all ready. So when they got home with the chicks, it was a nightmare to set up!!!
- I guess this doesn’t have anything really to do with the brooder. But… make sure you research each breed of chicken you want, or are planning on getting! This is very important. There are some breeds of chickens that stay very small. There are also some that get pretty large.

SET UP:
- Attach heat lamp to one side of brooder. Add in fresh food, and fresh water, in your dishes.
- Add in your bedding.
- Get chicks
- Put them in, dip their beaks in water, to encourage drinking water!
Well that’s all for today.
Until next time, my friends!
Do you think you want/or are going to go get chickens? What’s your favorite breed!? Do you like my shorter posts like this one, or longer? Should I do another poll?
